Google’s cafe strategy to attack IE
Having launched its browser on Tuesday, Google will now go all out in a war against Microsoft’s Internet Explorer by sewing up distribution agreements for its browser Chrome beta with cyber cafe owners in countries like India to take on Microsoft’s OEM bundling strength.
This was stated by Sundar Pichai, Google’s vice-president for product development and incharge of Chrome development. In a chat with Indiatimes Infotech over video-conferencing from Google’s Mountain View headquarters late on Tuesday night (US time), Pichai said Google recognised Microsoft’s strength in the browser space as it is the browser of choice for most desktop vendors worldwide.
The company will also work pro-actively with the enterprise users and developers alike.

Google Sites takes on Microsoft’s Sharepoint
Google is going head-to-head with Microsoft’s SharePoint by launching a web-based application that lets users create web pages.
Google Sites uses technology from wiki site JotSpot, which Google acquired in 2006, to let users embed YouTube videos and content from Google’s Calendar, Docs and Picasa sites and well as uploading any file format to their site. The collaboration function will also allow users to invite others to edit or add files to the web pages.
“Now with Google Sites, anyone can create an entirely customized site in minutes and invite others to contribute. We are literally adding an edit button to the web,” explained Dave Girouard, vice president and general manager of enterprise at Google.
To access Google Sites, users must first sign up to Google Apps.

Yahoo may consider Google alliance, source says
SAN FRANCISCO/NEW YORK (Reuters) – Yahoo Inc would consider a business alliance with Google Inc as one way to rebuff a $44.6 billion takeover proposal by Microsoft, a source familiar with Yahoo’s strategy said on Sunday.
Yahoo management is considering revisiting talks it held with Google several months ago on an alliance as an alternative to Microsoft’s bid, that source said. At $31 a share, Yahoo believes the bid undervalues the company, two sources said.
A second source close to Yahoo said it had received a procession of preliminary contacts by media, technology, telephone and financial companies. But the source said they were unaware whether any alternative bid was in the offing.

Google spars with European lawmakers over privacy
BRUSSELS (Reuters) – Google attacked European parliamentarians and privacy advocates on Monday for trying to have competition authorities consider the handling of personal information in its $3.1 billion takeover of rival DoubleClick.
The argument was the centerpiece of a European Parliament hearing to consider the burgeoning role of the Internet in impinging on the privacy of citizens.
The U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) signed off last month on Google’s $3.1 billion deal, which combines its dominance in pay-per-click Internet advertising with DoubleClick’s market-leading position in display ads.
