Google Sites takes on Microsoft’s Sharepoint
Google is going head-to-head with Microsoft’s SharePoint by launching a web-based application that lets users create web pages.
Google Sites uses technology from wiki site JotSpot, which Google acquired in 2006, to let users embed YouTube videos and content from Google’s Calendar, Docs and Picasa sites and well as uploading any file format to their site. The collaboration function will also allow users to invite others to edit or add files to the web pages.
“Now with Google Sites, anyone can create an entirely customized site in minutes and invite others to contribute. We are literally adding an edit button to the web,” explained Dave Girouard, vice president and general manager of enterprise at Google.
To access Google Sites, users must first sign up to Google Apps.
