Cisco takes service routers to the edge
Cisco has unveiled its Aggregation Services Router 1000 at the CeBIT show in Hanover designed for service provider and enterprise edge network deployment.
The networking firm said that the new router is purpose-built for edge networks and took over five years to develop at a cost of $250m.
The ASR 1000 Series is driven by the new QuantumFlow processor, an integrated and programmable router and service engine, and features software virtualisation to enable instant-on provisioning and simultaneous use of a wide range of service functionality.

SQL Star launched learning portal
SQL Star International on Friday announced the launch of learningport.com, a portal aimed at promoting IT learning through web interface.
The company, which has IT education as one of the key focus areas, has designed this to offer a blend of offline and online education for technology sector.
Addressing a press conference here, the Chairman and Managing Director of SQL Star, N. R. Ganti, said, “The shortage of skilled manpower in the IT industry is a critical barrier for Indian economy. The only way to overcome this is by facilitating a transformation by equipping the workforce and by bridging the skill gap.”
The focus of the portal is to offer an experiential learning environment, inculcate application of knowledge and personality development.

Finally, a reason to start drinking alcohol
WASHINGTON (Reuters) – People who do not drink alcohol may finally have a reason to start — a study published on Friday shows non-drinkers who begin taking the occasional tipple live longer and are less likely to develop heart disease.
People who started drinking in middle age were 38 percent less likely to have a heart attack or other serious heart event than abstainers — even if they were overweight, had diabetes, high blood pressure or other heart risks, Dr. Dana King of the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston and colleagues found.
Many studies have shown that light to moderate drinkers are healthier than teetotalers, but every time, the researchers have cautioned that there is no reason for the abstinent to start drinking.

Apple iPhone targets RIM with corporate e-mail
(Reuters) – Apple Inc said on Thursday its iPhone soon will support corporate e-mail, targeting a new market and challenging the dominance of Research In Motion Ltd’s popular Blackberry devices.
Apple also said it will roll out tools for developers to create software for the iPhone, news that was accompanied by a pledge from legendary venture capital firm Kleiner Perkins Caufield Byers to set up a $100 million “iFund” to back iPhone software start-ups.

Pioneer to post loss, exit plasma display production
TOKYO (Reuters) – Consumer electronics maker Pioneer Corp said it would fall into the red for the fourth straight year on costs to scrap production of plasma displays as it rejigs its strategy in the cut-throat flat TV market.
Pioneer is expected to now turn to Panasonic brand maker Matsushita Electric Industrial Co to supply it with panels for its plasma TVs, thereby allowing it to focus on design and marketing and save on production costs.
Pioneer is the world’s fifth-biggest plasma TV maker, but it has been struggling to compete with larger rivals such as plasma industry leader Matsushita and LG Electronics , which can leverage economies of scale.

Telecom watchdog wants orderly growth of cable TV
A consultation paper inviting comments and suggestions to better regulate the cable television service business in the country and help its orderly growth was circulated by the telecom watchdog Tuesday.
“An appropriate regulatory framework to enable the orderly growth of the sector is need of the hour,” said the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) that issued the paper among industry stakeholders.
“The provisions for registration, information systems for monitoring of cable TV industry, customer grievance redressal and quality of service etc need immediate attention,” the watchdog said in a statement.

Spacecraft images show rings of Saturn’s 2nd largest moon
(Xinhua) — Saturn’s second largest moon, Rhea, may have rings, according to images from a spacecraft managed by NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Pasadena, Los Angeles.
The finding was described in a study published in the March 7 issue of the journal Science.
Scientists at NASA believe the rings may be the remnants of an asteroid or comet collision, which circulated large quantities of gas and solid particles around Rhea.

BSNL places 5mn GSM lines order
New Delhi (PTI): Concerned over delays in enhancing GSM capacity due to tender controversy last year, state-owned BSNL has placed an order with the existing vendors Nortel and Motorola for adding five million lines in the Southern region.
“We have decided to place the order with the existing vendors for immediate requirement… Meanwhile, we are coming out with a tender for the Southern zone for adding 25 million GSM lines,” Kuldeep Goyal, Chairman and Managing Director of BSNL said.
The value of immediate order for the Southern zone is close to Rs 800 crore and the quantity to be supplied by the two American vendors would be in equal ratio.

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) – Savvy office workers frustrated that their on-the-job computer tools don’t function as smoothly as, say, an Apple iPod are taking matters into their own hands.
No longer are they relying on company technicians, or information technology (IT) administrators, to choose the software needed to get the job done. They know how to pluck tools right off the Web.
Industry observers use the term “consumerization” to describe the phenomenon whereby office workers are less likely to wait for the IT folks to equip them.

Google pulls map images on military request
(Reuters) – Google has complied with a request by the Pentagon to remove some online images from its street-level map service because they pose a security threat to U.S. military bases, military and company officials said on Thursday.
Gen. Gene Renuart, head of the military command responsible for homeland defense, said the Pentagon had talked to Google about the risks and expected the company to cooperate in removing selected images from its Street View service.
