A new research has revealed that having two portions of whole grains such as wholemeal bread and brown rice on a daily basis may almost halve the risk of developing pancreatic cancer.
According to the research, carried out by the University of California, San Francisco, a diet rich in these ingredients and other whole grain foods could bring about a substantial reduction in the risk of developing this form of cancer.
In the study of more than 2,000 men and women, a clear link between the amount of whole grains eaten and the chance of developing pancreatic cancer was revealed.

BANGALORE: A major fire broke out in a software firm in Bangalore in the wee hours on Monday but was extinguished in time by firefighters.
No casualties were reported, fire department said. “A major fire broke out in Genesis Microchip (India) Pvt Limited here around 0545. It was put out by around 0700 after timely action by fire personnel averting a major loss”, Chief Fire Officer, Ramesh said.
The fire, caused by a short-circuit, damaged about 25 per cent of the first floor of the three-floored building, he said.

A new version of the Firefox browser, now available for testing mainly by developers, offers improvements on finding frequently visited websites and tools for running Web applications without a live Internet connection.

The Beta 1 version of Firefox 3 released this week still has problems, including the inability to run newer Web-mail programmes from Yahoo Inc and Microsoft Corp, and a final version for consumers isn’t expected for several months.
But it offers a window on what’s to come. Many of its new features concern bookmarks, an area typically slow to change in the browsing world. One can now add keywords, or tags, to sort bookmarks by topic.

The first cruise ship built to ply the frigid waters off Antarctica became the first to sink there Friday. The red-hulled Explorer struck ice, taking on water as 154 passengers and crew members scrambled to safety aboard lifeboats and rafts. The ship later went to the bottom.

The 38-year-old vessel was in the middle of a 19-day voyage when it sent a distress call early Friday after its hull was punctured. A Norwegian cruise ship rescued the passengers and crew nearly two hours after they abandoned ship in freezing weather.

Two suicide bombers in Pakistan have killed at least 20 people and wounded many more in separate blasts on military targets in Rawalpindi. VOA’s Barry Newhouse reports from Islamabad.

The first blast struck a bus on the main road between Rawalpindi and Islamabad.
Police said the bomber rammed a car filled with explosives into a bus carrying employees of Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence Agency.

Sales of Sony’s PlayStation 3 console have been given a boost in North America since it cut the price of the console and introduced a cheaper version at the beginning of November.
The company said Thursday that combined sales of the older 80G-byte model and the new 40G-byte model have increased by 192 percent at the top-10 major retailers in North America and “more than doubled” overall.
After seeing poor sales all year the company cut the price of the 80G-byte model from US$599 to US$499, and introduced a cheaper US$399 version on Nov. 2, with a lower capacity hard-disk drive. In addition to the smaller drive, the cheaper version lacks the ability to play PlayStation 2 titles.

Three near-simultaneous bomb blasts have killed 13 people in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh (UP), the state government says.

Nine people were killed in the holy city of Varanasi, UP Chief Minister Mayawati told journalists, and four in the city of Faizabad.
The other attack was in the state capital, Lucknow.
There have been a number of bomb attacks in India this year, which have left well over 100 people dead.
Illiquid trading conditions brought on by the Thanksgiving holiday afforded the currency market a brief breather from the large price swings and volatile conditions of recent weeks, as the dollar strayed little from Wednesday’s levels against most of its major counterparts.

Late yesterday, the dollar was at 108.57 yen from 108.50 yen late Wednesday in New York. The euro was at $1.4855 from $1.4865 late Wednesday. The euro was at 161.27 yen from 161.28 yen.
Elsewhere, the dollar slipped a bit against the Swiss franc, to 1.1011 francs from 1.1019 francs, while the pound was trading at $2.0634 from $2.0663.
