IBM to recycle silicon wafers for solar industry

(Reuters) – International Business Machine Corp said on Tuesday it has developed a silicon wafer recycling system that may help ease the refined silicon shortage that has limited output of solar energy panels.

IBM said it can remove intellectual property from discarded scrap semiconductor wafers made out of silicon. It can then sell them to the solar industry which uses the silicon in photovoltaic cells that generate electricity on rooftops.

Every day about 250,000 wafers are produced globally to make chips for products from cell phones to computers and to monitor and control manufacturing, according to a wafer industry group.

Deadly computer worm on the prowl

A potentially dangerous computer worm called Storm has been silently infecting computers in India, creating a pathway into the system which can be exploited, either to steal data or flood your e-mail account with spams.

Having enticing subjects lines, the spam mails containing the worm baits people into opening them. Those who open the attachment then unknowingly become part of a Botnet (a collection of compromised computers running programmes having worms under a common command for nefarious purposes).

Experts in India said that the virus till now, has been infecting computers without causing serious damage. However, because it’s gathering strength, experts are considering it a serious threat.

Discovery astronauts finish solar truss installation

WASHINGTON: Space Shuttle Discovery astronauts successfully completed a mammoth operation to reposition a 17.5-tonne solar array and truss during a more than seven-hour-long spacewalk on Tuesday aboard the orbiting International Space Station.

US astronauts Scott Parazynski and Douglas Wheelock conducted the operation outside in a teamwork operation with other crew members inside the station.

Astronauts inside operated a robotic arm to move the solar array and truss, after which the spacewalkers permanently attached the truss in its new home and prepared it for operation.

New images of Comet Holmes

New pictures are coming in of Comet Holmes, this one an animation comparing the comet’s appearance on successive nights, and showing its size relative to the size of Jupiter at a similar distance.

If you haven’t seen it yet, step outside after dinner tonight, and look for a narrow triangle of stars below the (sideways) W-shaped constellation Cassiopeia, but above (and slightly to the right of) the bright star Capella – the brightest in that part of the sky. Holmes is the “star” on the left side of the base of that triangle.

Microsoft, states ask for change in oversight’s end

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Microsoft Corp and the states accusing it of continuing monopolistic behavior asked a federal judge to temporarily delay the end of government oversight of the software giant, according to court documents filed on Tuesday.

Most of the provisions from a 2002 consent decree between Microsoft and the federal government are set to expire on November 12.

In a joint motion, Microsoft and the 18 states pushing for the government to extend its oversight asked the court to delay the existing deadline “only for so long as necessary” but no later than January 31, 2008.

Yahoo adds media playing, languages to messaging

NEW YORK (Reuters) – Internet media company Yahoo Inc said on Tuesday it is adding media-playing features, large file transfers, new languages and other tools to its instant messaging service.

The move comes as a growing number of rivals — from incumbents like AOL to social network sites like News Corp’s MySpace — boost their positions in the market for instant messaging services.

Yahoo Messenger 9.0 launched as a test version and has added features similar to ones seen on social networks or media-sharing sites, including extra room to post a picture or other image next to contact names and the ability to share video or photos within a message screen.
